Strong basics are the building blocks of every gymnast’s success, and judges pay close attention to them from the very beginning. In this post, you’ll find short video clips paired with simple notes on what judges look for, so you can better understand how proper beginner techniques set Xcel Bronze – Silver and Levels 1-4 up for success as they continue their gymnastics training.
High Relevé Walk
Notice the feet turned out, the high extension arches and the heels pushed in. The walk is on straight legs. The inner thighs should be squeezed.
Proper Body Posture
Proper body posture is a foundational gymnastics skill that is needed on every event. In general, judges are looking for:
- long neck
- chin up
- shoulders pressed down
- arms pulled back to high V
- ribs in
- abdominals tight
- buttocks squeezed
- hips flat
- legs straight
- feet turned out
Proper Chassé
When a routine calls for a chassé, judges are looking for:
- Feet are turned in and steps throughout follow the toe-ball-heel sequence
- Proper body posture maintained
- Feet are locked and pointed in the air
- Plié position with the feet turned out both in and out of the chassé
Proper Passé Position
Learning and mastering the Passé is essential for success on Floor and Beam. Judges are looking for:
- knee elevated above horizontal
- toes and foot pointed by the knee straight
- toes don’t touch the knee or rest against it
